If you love Athens, Ohio University, and Tumblr, how would you like to run this blog?
You don’t have to post a minimum number of things per day or stick to any certain topic. The whole idea of the Neighborhoodr network is to be a snapshot of what’s happening in our community, and to allow that community to submit things as well, whether it’s news, tourism info, photos, sports, or upcoming events!
Some Neighborhoodr blogs have multiple editors, so this could be a cool blog to run with some friends! If you’d like to take over this blog, send us a message or email neighborhoodr.athensohio@gmail.com!

I love this blog and want to see it do well, but I’m having trouble finding the time to do that. I have worked pretty hard to keep posts organized, and I’m willing to work with you to make sure you have any resources you need, and you can do anything you want to do with them!

‏ @mccullough_23: Just found out mom’s weekend at OU produces the highest condom sales out of any weekend in Athens #disgusting
This stat has been floating around for a while. Just who did the math here? Sounds like a joke that has since become legend…kind of like the hot tub kid.

Long-term insufficient funding from state capital bills coupled with a massive construction boom in the 1960s left Ohio University with a staggering deferred maintenance backlog that it is now struggling to address.

Enrollment at OU doubled during Vernon Alden’s time as president from 1962 to 1969, and the increased number of students and faculty needed to be accommodated with new buildings.

“Our enrollment doubled because of the demographics of the time, so we had to do a crash program of building,” Alden said.’

Nelsonville studies sign strategies for circumventing bypass

NELSONVILLE — With all the cars that will be going around Nelsonville when the Route 33 bypass is complete, there’s concern that dollars also will be bypassing the city. The Nelsonville Chamber of Commerce is hoping to divert some of those cars — and customers — into town, and is exploring its options for signs that could entice people to take an exit.
“It’s pretty difficult along the route of the bypass because of all the Wayne National Forest land,” Chamber President Kevin Dotson said of the search for sign locations. “It’s nothing we can’t overcome.”
Much of the bypass goes through the national forest, and Wayne spokesman Gary Chancey said federal regulations prohibit the construction or placement of signs in a national forest.

Lo-fi indie darlings added to fest slate

Legendary indie-rock band Guided By Voices is replacing Bad Brains at the 2012 Nelsonville Musical Festival, taking place the weekend of May 18-20 at Hocking College. The Dayton band joins a lineup of about 50 acts at the fest, which is a 15-minute drive from Athens.
On Friday, May 18, the band will perform with its “classic ‘93-‘96 lineup,” according to Brian Koscho, marketing & promotions coordinator for festival presenter Stuart’s Opera House.
Though making music since 1983, Guided By Voices, fondly known as GBV by its many fans, switched up its members until what would have been its “final album” was released in 2004. Six years later, the band came together for single show, which became a tour, which became a pledge for new albums.

Sheriff Patrick Kelly knew that Athens County had a drug problem when he took office.

Now into his fourth year as sheriff, Kelly has come the realization that the county has a full-blown drug epidemic. Nonetheless, Kelly says that he is optimistic.

“I’m not naive about the drug epidemic, but I don’t believe we’re losing the war on drugs,” Kelly said.

FreedomOhio picks Athens County to kick-off same-sex marriage ban repeal

“This is the best corner ever!” exclaimed Andy Murphy as throngs of Ohio University students and their mothers, in town for OU’s Moms Weekend, passed the Athens County Courthouse on Saturday.
Murphy was one of five petitioners in Athens on Saturday to kick off an 88-county effort to collect the 385,253 valid signatures needed to put an Ohio constitutional amendment on the November 2013 ballot to repeal the state’s ban on same-sex marriage.
Athens County was chosen to kick-off the petition drive because it was the only county in Ohio where a majority of voters in 2004 rejected the ban, a constitutional amendment that defined marriage as being between a man and a woman.

YouTube puts faces to Palmer Fest fire

Hours after the flames were put out at Palmer Fest, an infamous YouTube video of a girl from Illinois student surfaced and went viral.

Notorious phrases from the clip, such as the student asking “Are you cooking a pizza?” when she heard the smoke alarm going off, portrayed a perhaps lax atmosphere within the house during an otherwise tense situation.

Palmer Fest’s sudden end resulted in an investigation of the cause of the fire, which was reported to be arson. A $5,000 reward has since been offered to anyone with information leading to the person’s identification.
